This course examines the rich and diverse art created under the impetus of Christian thought and culture. We will explore the origins and development of Christian art and architecture within the historical, cultural, and social context of the Roman, Byzantine, Medieval and Renaissance worlds. Major Christian centers such as Rome, Constantinople, and Ravenna and their monuments will be looked at. We will also study: early Christian catacombs, sculpture and painting; Roman basilicas and early churches; Byzantine icons; illuminated manuscripts; and Medieval and Renaissance altarpieces, religious paintings and sculptures, including Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel. Discuss the role of the Virgin Mary. There will be a brief overview of art created between the Renaissance and modern times.
